6/12/2023 0 Comments Meredith russo birthdayRusso’s narrative expression of the need to live one’s truth, and the option of choosing love through it all, is a valuable reminder of what really matters.” ― The New York Times Book Review. “Lovers who surmount the odds have always been intense emotional fodder, but rarely have we seen a story like Meredith Russo’s ue and raw, haunting and undeniable. The novel begins on I-75 in Chattanooga and follows six birthdays, beginning with their thirteenth, of Morgan and Eric, two close friends, both born as males on the same day. It is a loosely autobiographical novel by a life-long Chattanooga resident who transitioned from male to female in 2013 when she was in her mid-twenties. Powerful for adults as well as mature high school or even junior high kids, Birthday is the sequel to If I Was Your Girl, Meredith Russo’s first novel, published last year, that won the Stonewall Book Award, was a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award, and won awards from Kirkus Reviews, Publishers Weekly, and fifteen other literary organizations.

6/12/2023 0 Comments An american lyricAnalyzing Robertson's and Rankine's uses of noisy phatic pronouns-pronouns which, in being reduced to a deictic potentiality, gesture to their own function as indexes of a virtual and noisy mass of possible subjective projections-the article argues that a phatic mode of subjectivity and address can be understood as typical of lyric poetry's response to the communicative situation of the mass public sphere. Phatic expressions are signifying acts that indicate merely that a channel for communication is open, that signification can occur. This essay takes the image of the noise-filled television screen that appears as a visual refrain in Claudia Rankine's Don't Let Me Be Lonely as the starting point for a discussion of phatic language in her work and in the work of the poet Lisa Robertson. But in between chaotic book tours, disastrous interviews, and cringe-inducing interactions with other artists, life happens: Tomine fumbles his way into marriage, parenthood, and an indisputably fulfilling existence. Tomine illustrates the amusing absurdities of how we choose to spend our time, all the while mining his conflicted relationship with comics and comics culture. When a sudden medical incident lands Tomine in the emergency room, he begins to question if it was really all worthwhile: despite the accolades and opportunities of a seemingly charmed career, it's the gaffes, humiliations, slights, and insults he's experienced (or caused) within the industry that loom largest in his memory. What happens when a childhood hobby grows into a lifelong career? The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Cartoonist, Adrian Tomine's funniest and most revealing foray into autobiography, offers an array of unexpected answers. 6/12/2023 0 Comments Sunset song bookAnd Davies’s masterful exploration of his underlying themes – the strength of the human spirit, the wonders of nature, even the brutality and fickleness of fate – sweeps everything before them" luminous and lyrical, sorrowful and celebratory, and, most impressive of all, shot through with an intense compassion for its characters, good and bad alike.” “Sunset Song is quietly devastating in its emotional impact, but its passions are held firmly in check. "Sunset Song is a hymn to the enduring power of the great outdoors, out-Malicking Terrence Malick in its obsession with earth, wind and fire" "A beautifully made and deeply felt adaptation of Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s 1932 novel of rural Scotland before the first world war, “ “Davies’s careful, patient visual sense brings out the Hardyesque nature of this story.” “this primal contrast of human suffering with natural beauty is a paradigm that persists in resurfacing in British social realist movies today." His most influential works include Starship Troopers(1959) and The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress (1966). He went on to write several successful novels and cultivated a wide readership. His short story ‘The Green Hills of Earth’ was published in the Saturday Evening Post in 1947. After Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Heinlein decided to frame his writing in a more political fashion, coining the term ‘speculative fiction’. His first work, ‘Life Line’ (1939), was published in the magazine Astounding Science Fiction and its success motivated Heinlein to start writing full time. Having served in the US Navy for five years he went on to study mathematics and physics at the University of California, which greatly influenced the technical nature of his writing. He was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1907. Sherri Puzey is an editor at Zibby Mag and a marketing manager at Zibby Books. A state or realm of unrealistic and idealized fancy, beyond the realms of possibility. I highly recommend this one for book lovers or for anyone who simply loves getting lost in a well-crafted and absorbing story. At its heart, it’s a book about stories: how they draw us in and connect us–and even change us. I absolutely love Doerr’s writing and am in awe of his creativity in developing this story and tying it all together. I had high expectations for this one and really enjoyed it! Even though the length (over 600 pages!) is a little daunting, the alternation between the characters and time periods provides excellent pacing. The common thread through these stories is an ancient text about a man who longs to travel to a utopia somewhere in the sky. CLOUD CUCKOO LAND is the much-anticipated novel from Anthony Doerr, author of ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE, which I loved! His latest novel (now out in paperback!) weaves together characters and stories from three distinct times: 1400s Constantinople, present-day Idaho, and an interstellar ship decades in the future. |
